The presentation ceremony of the Observatory for the Prevention of Violent Extremism

On the 30th of January, NOVACT and the Maghreb Coordination of Human Rights Organizations (CMODH) are organizing an official ceremony to present, on the one hand, the Euro-Mediterranean civil society Action Plan for the prevention of ALL forms of violent extremism and, on the other hand, the Observatory to Prevent Extremism Violent (OPEV) in the region. The event will feature key figures from associations from the north and southern bank of the Mediterranean, such as Ahmed Galai, a member of the Tunisian League for Human Rights, an association which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015; Khadija Ryadi, CMODH coordinator and United Nations Peace Prize winner; Samer Muhareb, director of ARDD-Legal Aid in Jordan, and Luca Gervasoni, co-director of NOVACT. Councillors of Barcelona City Council Gerardo Pisarello and Jaume Asens, Councillor of Foreign Affairs of the Generalitat of Catalonia Raül Romeva, Delegate of the Presidency of the Barcelona Provincial Council Jaume Ciurana and representatives of the EU, The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Development Program will also be attending the event.

The ceremony will be divided into four parts. Zlatko Lagumdžija, former Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina and founder of the Shared Societies and Values Sarajevo Foundation, will be responsible for making the keynote address. The Office of the High Commissioner for the United Nations Program on Human Rights and the United Nations Development Program will present the United Nations Plan of Action, which aligns with the Euro-Mediterranean civil society. The public institutions attending will present the task that the City Council and the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the European Union are carrying out in order to prevent violent extremism. Finally, representatives of civil society will present the Euro-Mediterranean civil society Action Plan for the prevention of all forms adopted by violent extremism and the Observatory for the Prevention of Violent Extremism in the region. This observatory aims to be a coordination tool for hundreds of organizations that will hopefully ratify the Action Plan in order to promote its implementation.

The event will take place on the 30th of January at the Saló de Cent (Plaça Sant Jaume 1, 9.30am-2pm) and is open to the public under pre-registration.
