Israeli occupation forces arrested young activist Ahed Tamimi, her mother Nariman and Nour Tamimi

NOVACT (International Institute for Nonviolent Action) expresses its strongest condemnation of the arrest of 17 years old Ahed Tamimi, her mother Nariman, her father Bassem and another young relative from the village of Nabi Saleh, Nour Tamimi, who was arrested the night after Ahed. They are the four latest of over 450 Palestinians arrested by Israeli occupation forces following U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on Wednesday 19 Dec 2017, overnight raided their house and arrested Ahed Tamimi while she was sleeping in her bed. Teenage popular resistance icon Ahed has become internationally known as a prominent activist for the defense of Palestinian rights under occupation, including the defense of her younger brother when he was seized by an occupation soldier and her participation in regular protests against land confiscation targeting Nabi Saleh and other villages around Ramallah. She and her family had stand up to armed Israeli soldiers, land confiscation and settlement construction exploiting the resources. She has spoken internationally, including in Turkey, South Africa, and in the European Parliament, about the nonviolent resistance and the role of women in the Palestinian struggle against occupation.

Young reporter Ahed’s viral images (documenting human rights violations by IOF) have made her a visible target for pro-Israel activists. Yesterday Ahed was targeted for arrest after she was attacked by Israeli media while she was protesting against occupation soldiers in Nabi Saleh, who shot a 14-year-old boy in the head with a rubber-coated metal bullet. The boy, Mohammed Tamimi, is in a medically-induced coma. Tamimi reported that the soldiers violently invaded the home, hitting Ahed’s mother, Nariman Tamimi, and siblings and confiscated phones, cameras, laptops and other electronics.
There are hundreds of Palestinian children jailed by Israel and frequently subjected to beatings, physical and psychological abuses and threats and interrogations in absence of their parents or lawyers, in violation of international law. We urge people around the world to be aware of these human rights violations and to take action to demand freedom for Ahed and her family, as well as her fellow detained and jailed Palestinian children in occupation detention centers, interrogation centers and prisons.

After the arrest of Ahed, the occupation forces arrested Nariman Tamimi while she was in front of “Benyamin” Israeli police station north of Ramallah, where she was heading to know the fate of her daughter. Ahed’s friend Nour as well was arrested during the night one day after her friend’s detention. Ahed’s father Bassem Tamimi was subjected to interrogation yesterday in Ofer, while attending the trial of her daughter. He has already been released. Today will take place the trial of Nariman and Nour.

The Palestinian popular resistance has never been intimidated by the politics of indiscriminate arrests or the systematic repression exercised by the Israeli forces, and it must be clear for all that we call on you, the citizens of the world, to stand alongside with us to support our just cause for freedom. This includes standing with detained and jailed Palestinian political prisoners in our struggle for liberation, justice, and dignity.
