Mobilizing health assets in Morocco to improve health right

The Community Healthcare: Mobilizing health assets in Morocco to improve health right project aims to improve the conditions of human right to health and access to public, free and universal health coverage in Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate region (TAT) in Morocco by promoting the identification and implementation of a community health strategy that connects and mobilizes all healthcare assets (civil society, public institutions, health workers, citizens) in the region.

With an initial intended duration of 18 months, the expected results of this project are:

  1. Strengthen the capacities of the local association network in the identification and implementation of community health strategies to promote their participation in the guarantee of the right to health in the Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate region.
  2. Identify and map the health assets (civil society, public institutions, health workers, citizens) in the TAT region improving their registration and understanding, to improve the knowledge, the understanding and the consultation between all assets linked directly or indirectly in the promotion of health in the TAT region.
  3. Develop community health intervention strategies that strengthen the citizen participation in the definition of health access deficits and the development of innovative solutions in health in the TAT region.
  4. Establish a consulting debate space between institutions and civil society in a national level to evaluate the obtained results by the project and expand the multiplication of community healthcare strategies in other Morocco regions.

The latest reform of the Moroccan Constitution of 2011, in the Article 31, recognizes health as a fundamental right for all citizens. But the reality of this country is another. Morocco occupies the 129 place of the Human Development Index that, each year, makes the United Nations Development Program, given the high percentage of illiterate population and limited access to health. Meanwhile, the Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate region (TAT), where the project is carried out, is one of the most rural, tucked and isolated areas of the country. Illiteracy, maternal mortality and the few hospitals and health centers are some of the major problems in the zone.

Through a process that aims to promote the community health mechanisms in the TAT region, this project tries to encourage and benefit the contact between all social assets involved, directly or indirectly, with health promotion in a local level. Strengthening the capacities of the association network, this project aims to improve the coordination between citizens, health professional, civil society organizations and institutions, with the aim of improving their collective contribution to guarantee the human right to health in the TAT region.
