News: Together we all add up to deal with the climate emergency

From Novact we join the week of the mobilization for the climate and we stop the 27th of September to demand urgent measures that can face the climatic emergency that the planet suffers.

September 2019

We are at a key moment for our planet, which demands urgent measures and policies that respect Human Rights (HR), improve people’s quality of life and care of nature and the environment.

Human activity in the massive processes of extraction of Natural Resources, production and consumption, characteristic of the capitalist system, is generating a great negative impact on the environment, elevating the effects of climate change to an unprecedented scale, with a global reach.

To make us all aware of this and so that we can all participate in the change, the youth organization Fridays for Future has promoted at a global level the week of mobilization for the climate on September 20 to 27. The week culminates on September 27, with massive mobilizations around the world.

This week of mobilization also coincides with the United Nations climate summit, held on September 23 in New York. The meeting seeks to ensure that the ODS are met and to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, ratified by 184 countries to strengthen their commitment and global response to curb the threat of climate change.

Climate change impacts and Call to action

The impacts of climate change can already be felt in all parts of the planet and are having a direct effect on people’s quality of life and an increasingly significant cost to the economies of nations: the oceans have become warmer; the amount of ice and snow is constantly decreasing; the growth of seas and oceans is progressive; extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, are becoming more frequent and have strong consequences; cities are increasingly concentrating higher levels of pollution… But the poorest nations suffer the worst, and the most vulnerable people, and collectives, are increasingly forced to go to new places that allow them to have a better quality of life.

For decades, experts have been alerting us to the drift of our current consumption system. Recent studies recommend limiting global temperature increase to 1.5ºC.

“Most of the effects of climate change will persist for a long time to come, even if emissions stop” – Conclusion of the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2013).

This requires urgent action to change our lifestyles and consumption patterns, as well as the commitment of governments, administrations and civil society.

Therefore, action for the climate emergency must be urgent, forceful and collective to start implementing possible solutions that will allow us to direct the change towards a more sustainable way of life and create economies that are resilient and respectful with human rights and the environment.

In defense of the future of our planet, from Novact we have joined this manifesto, along with other organizations and collectives, in which we encourage society as a whole to join the mobilization to build an alternative consumption model that respects natural resources, the environment, human rights and the lives of all people.
