The Institute Novact of Nonviolence is a non-profit association dedicated to conflict transformation and peacebuilding. It has been working in the Euro-Mediterranean region for more than 20 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NOVACT is committed to\u202fdriving change\u202fin fragile and conflict-affected contexts, creating transformative policies that promote\u202fpeace, defend civic space, generate human security, ecological justice, gender justice, digital justice, and prevent corporate abuses. The aim is to ensure that decisions affecting the future of\u202fcommunities\u202fcan be made by the communities themselves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NOVACT is closely connected to social movements through a comprehensive protection strategy, understanding that for\u202fsocial transformation, it is crucial to work on the\u202fcollective strength of the people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NOVACT\u202fwas founded by a group of former conscientious objectors to the Spanish army during the Franco dictatorship. They created the association to share their experience in conflict transformation with the people. They aimed to work with individuals who organized themselves in response to violations of their rights, with the goal of contributing to a peaceful, just, dignified, and equitable world.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NOVACT\u202foperates in 14 countries across the Euro-Mediterranean region. Geographically, our intervention is divided into three regions: the\u202fMaghreb, with the central office located in\u202fTunis\u202fand another in the\u202fSahrawi Refugee Camps of Tindouf<\/span>;<\/span><\/b>\u202fthe\u202fMashreq, with the central office in Amman,<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/b>Jordan, and one in Ramallah,\u202fPalestine<\/span>;<\/span><\/b>\u202fand finally, Europe, with the central office in\u202fBarcelona\u202fand additional offices in\u202fMadrid.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Context<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 marked a dramatic escalation of the eight-year-old conflict that began with Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea and signified a historic turning point for Ukraine territorial stability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>At the same time, Ukrainian civil society began spontaneously and courageously to organize themselves with the aim of countering the military occupation through hundreds of nonviolent actions, including civil disobedience, road blockades, civilian evacuation or communication campaigns.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is in this sense where the idea of a project reinforcing democratic governance and civil society capacities\u00a0 took form. The current project aims to strengthening democratic governance within local governments and politically empowering the local communities of Kyiv, with the aim of creating a framework for social recovery grounded in principles of resilience, peace, and non-violence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
