Voices from the Resistance. Human Rights Violations in Occupied Western Sahara in 2025
Together with ACAPS Catalunya, we present a new edition of the report Voices from the Resistance, prepared by the Working Group on Human Rights in Western Sahara. The report documents 170 human rights violations recorded during 2025, a 70% increase compared to the previous year and the highest figure since this monitoring system was established.
The report compiles cases documented by Sahrawi human rights activists and defenders, complemented by information from international organisations, the United Nations and the media. It also warns of the increasing information blockade in the territory, with between 20 and 25 journalists, international observers and human rights defenders expelled or denied entry during 2025.
Repression and Resource Appropriation
The documented violations include arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearance, discrimination, violations of economic and social rights, and repression against activists, students and journalists. The report also analyses the impact of the expansion of major green hydrogen, intensive agriculture and tourism projects, which contribute to the appropriation of land and natural resources in the occupied territory.
Recommendations to the International Community
The report concludes with recommendations addressed to the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union and the Spanish State, urging them to strengthen human rights protection mechanisms and fulfil their responsibilities regarding the decolonisation process of Western Sahara.
